Conceived and Choreographed by Award-winning collaborators Dormeshia, Derick K. Grant & Jason Samuels Smith, Raising The Bar is a new revue celebrating the timeless relationship between Tap Dance and Jazz: two of the most popular original African-American art forms that has since been embraced worldwide. Raising The Bar challenges perceptions of the standard chorus line, where dancers are instead offered moments to shine in their own right, through dynamic and intricate arrangements. Reminiscent of great American Vaudeville, the show concept while inspired by the era, includes a more contemporary feel.- Solo acts feature some of our Tap community’s own leading voices across styles and generations. This production debuted as part of the first annual Tap Family Reunion weekend events and was originally presented by The Schomburg Center at The Langston Hughes Auditorium.

Reviews:
"“Raising the Bar,” choreographed and directed by the three organizers to convey, in (Dormeshia’s) words, “how we feel about the dance.” The dominant feeling was a love of tradition, expressed even in the format, with a jazz band and a singer (the ebullient Antoinette Montague, who also played kazoo) accompanying a series of hotshot improvisers (Maurice Chestnut, Nico Rubio) and octogenarian masters (Skip Cunningham, Brenda Bufalino)." - NY Times

"Up in Harlem last night, the tap fam turned out for the signature event of the first annual Tap Family Reunion. Raising The Bar--created by formidable tap stars Dormeshia, Derick K. Grant and Jason Samuels-Smith--celebrated National Tap Dance Day, birthday of ancestor Bill “Bojangles” Robinson. Hosted Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, the show was cookin' like the first barbecue of Memorial Day weekend. People, without exaggeration, this was one of the best and hottest shows of New York's jam-packed season. Following a brief introduction by the three co-conspirators--they do call themselves The Super Villainz--and a blessing from renowned Debbie Allen, the evening took off with the warm, sumptuous jazz of Igmar Thomas's quartet."- InfiniteBody
